Tendrils of autumn mist
Dancing up the river
A single clear drop of dew
Slides off an overhanging leaf
Suspends momentarily
And drops like a weight into the water
Shattering the reflected moonlight
Into thousands of minute fragments
That ripple and shimmer like an army of phosphorus fireflies.
Arm in arm the lovers go
Down to the riverside.
Port and Starboard
Left and Right
They sail away into the night
Eyes lit by starlight.
I see their faces flushed and warm
I know they will return at dawn
Because I\'m always here to watch them.
A silent boat drifts past
Gliding, and I shiver,
A single star as clear as day
Twinkles among folds of midnight blue
White, fiery, pure and serene
Suspended, hanging,
Then it falls like a leaf
Into oblivion,
Lighting the sky with silver sparks
That glimmer and shimmer
Like an army of phosphorus fireflies.
